As the economy opens back up, competition in the ecommerce space is becoming fiercer. If a customer has a bad shopping experience with one retailer, they won’t hesitate to move on to the next and never look back. Gaining customer trust and loyalty is more important than ever. To discuss how retailers can improve the customers’ experience by wowing them with colorful, branded packages that are 100% recyclable, Digital Commerce 360 spoke with Mark Schlossman, executive vice president at Accurate Box.
How is the packaging industry fairing now more than a year into COVID-19?
A lot has changed in terms of carton manufacturing and raw materials. They have become costly and lead times have expanded. There are shortages not only in paper and glue but also in labor. In the past few months, those problems have accelerated for companies around the U.S.
What are the biggest packaging challenges retailers are facing?
More consumers are now demanding that their packages are environmentally friendly and 100% recyclable. That means it’s becoming increasingly important that retailers start using sustainable packaging materials. The use of single-use plastic has been under scrutiny for a while. Customers don’t want to receive an expensive blouse from a luxury apparel retailer in a single-use plastic bag that will immediately go in the trash and could end up in the ocean.
Additionally, many retailers ship their products in plain, unbranded cardboard boxes. But they should be taking this opportunity to delight their consumers with branded packaging. Companies like Accurate Box, for example, can print packages with company logos, bright colors, various textures, OR codes linking to special offers and even scratch-and-sniff labels. These can go on the inside or outside of the box. And all these packages are 100% recyclable.
How do decorative features and sustainable packages help retailers retain long-term customers?
It’s a much more satisfying experience to receive that expensive blouse in a beautifully decorated package that is 100% recyclable than it is to receive it in a single-use plastic bag or a plain, unbranded box the customer will throw away.
Retailers should remember that these people are already their customers. And the arrival of that package-when the retailer has the customer’s full attention-is the perfect opportunity to wow them with a beautifully branded experience that will prompt the customer to shop with that retailer again. Delighting the customer is likely to lead to repeat purchases-and ultimately long-term customer loyalty.
How can retailers start using these packaging features?
They can reach out to Accurate Box. We know there is a premium between the plastic bag and the box, but a branded box can improve the customer experience through brand imagery. Additionally, we can change the graphics on the box very easily from season to season or holiday to holiday in order to engage customers and promote different product lines. We also take sustainability very seriously. All our products are 100% recyclable, 70% of the materials that make up our packages come from previously recycled materials, and all of the inks we use on our boxes are environmentally friendly.
And finally, for the past 10 years, we have focused heavily on reinvesting in our process. We use the highest quality equipment, such as our printing presses and die cutters, to increase the speed and throughput of our package production. With ecommerce retailers in mind, we’ve acquired a digital press, allowing us to print graphics on both the inside and outside of boxes.
